The Portal - The Hessdalen Lights Phenomenon
Unusual lights have been reported here since 1940s or earlier. Especially high activity of Hessdalen lights took place from December 1981 until the summer of 1984 when lights were observed 15 to 20 times per week. The frequency of the lights caused a gathering numerous tourists staying there overnight to see the phenomenon. Since then, the activity has decreased and now the lights are observed some 10 - 20 times per year.
The Hessdalen light most often is a bright, white or yellow light of unknown origin standing or floating above the ground level. Sometimes the light can be seen for more than one hour. There are several other types of unexplained lights observed in the Hessdalen valley.
Since 1983 there has been ongoing scientific research often nicknamed "Project Hessdalen", initiated by Dr. Erling Strand. In 1998, the Hessdalen AMS automated scientific research station was built in the valley. It registers and records the appearance of lights.
Later, the EMBLA program was initiated. It brings together established scientists and students into researching these lights. Leading research institutions are Østfold University College (Norway) and the Italian National Research Council.

Filmmaker James Cameron to Dive to Planet's Deepest Point: THE MARIANA TRENCH
James Cameron, the film maker who brought us Avatar, Titanic, The Terminator, and, fittingly, The Abyss. is about to embark on a journey to the real abyss:
He’s going to go there solo, and has already set the world record for solo diving in tests.
The Mariana Trench.
Already the tech-laden sub has taken Cameron a record-breaking 5.1 miles (8.2 kilometers) straight down. That Tuesday dress rehearsal for Mariana made the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER the deepest-diving submersible in operation and the deepest-diving single-pilot sub in history.
Designed to sink strangely—and efficiently—upright, the 26-foot-tall (8-meter-tall) craft was eight years in the making. Among its advances is a specially designed foam that helps allows the new sub to weigh in at 12 metric tons, making it some 12 times lighter than Trieste.
Cameron hopes to achieve something that was not possible 50 years ago. He hopes to return with real life monsters from the deep and soil samples.
“When you’re making a movie, everybody’s read the script and they know what’s going to happen next, when you’re on an expedition, nature hasn’t read the script, the ocean hasn’t read the script, and no one knows what’s going to happen next", said Cameron.
Cameron, 57, said he hopes the project will help answer some surprisingly basic scientific questions about ocean trenches, such as whether fish can live in the sea’s deepest reaches.
“We’re gonna go down there with our cameras, our lights, and find the answers to some of those questions,” Cameron said.

Located in the western Pacific east of the Philippines and 62 miles (100 kilometers) southwest of the U.S. territory of Guam, the Mariana Trench is a crescent-shaped scar in the Earth’s crust that measures more than 1,500 miles (2,550 kilometers) long and 43 miles (69 kilometers) wide on average. The distance between the surface of the ocean and the trench’s deepest point, the Challenger Deep, is nearly 7 miles (11 kilometers). If Mount Everest were dropped into the Mariana Trench, its peak would still be more than a mile (1.6 kilometers) underwater.
The Mariana Trench is part of a global network of deep troughs that cut across the ocean floor. They form when two tectonic plates collide. At the collision point, one of the plates dives beneath the other into the Earth’s mantle, creating an ocean trench.
The depths of the Mariana Trench were first plumbed in 1875 by the British ship H.M.S. Challenger as part of the first global oceanographic cruise. The Challenger scientists recorded a depth of 4,475 fathoms (about five miles, or eight kilometers) using a weighted sounding rope. In 1951, the British vessel H.M.S. Challenger IIreturned to the spot with an echo-sounder and measured a depth of nearly seven miles (11 kilometers).
Historic Drive:
Because of its extreme depth, the Mariana Trench is cloaked in perpetual darkness and the temperature is just a few degrees above freezing. The water pressure at the bottom of the trench is a crushing eight tons per square inch—or about a thousand times the standard atmospheric pressure at sea level. Pressure increases with depth.
The first and only time humans descended into the Challenger Deep was more than 50 years ago. In 1960, Jacques Piccard and Navy Lt. Don Walsh reached this goal in a U.S. Navy submersible, a bathyscaphe called the Trieste. After a five-hour descent, the pair spent only a scant 20 minutes at the bottom and were unable to take any photographs due to clouds of silt stirred up by their passage.
Until Piccard and Walsh’s historic dive, scientists had debated whether life could exist under such extreme pressure. But at the bottom, the Trieste‘s floodlight illuminated a creature that Piccard thought was a flatfish, a moment that Piccard would later describe with excitement in a book about his journey.
“Here, in an instant, was the answer that biologists had asked for the decades,” Piccard wrote. “Could life exist in the greatest depths of the ocean? It could!”

Exploring the mystery of the Majestic 12
In the whirlwind of the alleged Roswell incident cover up lies a secret set of government documents that compiles a 12-man list of our nation’s finest scientists, military leaders, and government officials.
These men were allegedly authorized by President Truman to investigate the Roswell incident, and were called the Majestic 12.
The report of the Majestic 12 lurks in the shadows of UFO accounts, and its story woven through a web of top-secret memos, highly classified meetings, and clandestine operations.
Don Most, best remembered as Ralph from Happy Days, notions himself as an amateur ufologist. He is partnering with TV producer Bryce Zabel and Bridget Healey to produce a film surrounding the mystery of the Majestic 12, and the people who research it.
Currently in the development stage, they hope this film will bring to light the mystery that surrounds this top secret government group.

Pitlochry UFO Case
While most reports of flying saucers are quickly dismissed by defence chiefs, the previously classified papers show the sighting, which took place near Pitlochry in 1990, was taken extremely seriously. A former MoD official who investigated the case told Scotland on Sunday that despite strenuous efforts they could find no earthly explanation for the craft.
Witnesses reported seeing a large, diamond-shaped object hanging in the air next to a RAF Harrier above the A9 at Calvine, north of Pitlochry, on August 4. The UFO is said to have hovered for about 10 minutes before zooming skywards at high speed and disappearing from view.
The apparent close encounter of the Caledonian kind was photographed by members of the public whose images appear to show a blurry, diamond-shaped craft next to a jet. Fearing the pictures would spark significant media interest, the MoD decided to bring it to the attention of the Government. A Whitehall official wrote in a memo: "Such stories are not normally drawn to the attention of ministers. "On this occasion, however, the MoD has been provided with six photographic negatives of an alleged UFO... and has been asked for comments almost certainly for inclusion in a forthcoming story."
The memo suggested the media should be told that "no definite conclusion had been reached regarding the large diamond-shaped object". It has also emerged the MoD went on to commission a series of line drawings of the object the following year, noting that the "sensitivity of the material suggests very special handling". Former MoD civil servant Nick Pope, who dealt with UFO reports, described the image as the "most impressive" ever shown to his department.
He said: "The MoD has all sorts of equipment and expertise that we used to analyse and enhance imagery to tell whether there were any signs of fakery.
"This picture was assessed by our digital experts, who concluded it was a real photograph showing a solid-structured craft which was estimated as being around 25m in diameter. There were no wings and no visible signs of any propulsion system. It was exotic and unknown in a way far beyond even the most modern stealth aircraft being trialled at that time."
Pope, who served in the MoD for 21 years until 2006, claims they were unable to come up with any firm answers about the craft and its origins.
"I remember going to a briefing with the defence intelligence staff where the photograph was discussed. My opposite number in defence intelligence pointed his finger to the left and said, 'It is not the Americans,' then to the right, saying, 'It is not the Soviets,' and finally, he said, 'That only leaves...' and pointed his finger directly up."
During his time with the ministry, Pope had a blown-up copy of the photograph on his office wall until it was personally taken down by his superior. He recalled: "My head of division removed it and put it in his drawer because he was convinced, wrongly in my opinion, that it showed a top secret prototype craft.
"Somewhere along the line the photo disappeared, but I have no idea whether it was genuinely misplaced or whether it was treated as something we shouldn't have seen and put through a shredder."
Meanwhile, another newly released file reveals how efforts to create a computer database of UFO reports were halted amid fears of a potential public relations disaster should its existence come to light. The aim was to produce a database which could supply information and explanations when ministers were asked questions in Parliament about sightings.
A memo from March 1988 revealed the project was to be ditched because it "contravened" statements from ministers saying UFOs did not pose a threat to the UK. The official wrote: "I also understand that there was some concern about public reaction if knowledge of the work being undertaken emerged in the media."
A further file insists that the death of an US Air Force pilot attached to the RAF was a "tragic accident" rather than the result of a UFO encounter. Captain William Schaffner's fatal crash into the North Sea on September 8, 1970, made headlines over allegations he was on an secret operation to intercept a glowing, unidentified craft. But an MoD report concluded: "There is no reason to suggest that there is any sort of UFO incident in any way connected with the tragic crash."
