NASA's video shows how it plans to catch an asteroid ‘the stepping stone to Mars’

Charles Bolden, NASA's administrator, has said that a human mission to Mars is the space agency's top priority.

Experts predict that NASA could put a team of astronauts on Mars by 2033 if plans to capture an asteroid in 2025, which could lead to a base for a Mars mission, are a success.

1. The first part of getting to Mars is an asteroid capture mission scheduled for 2025.
2. NASA is to find an asteroid which is between 23 and 33 feet wide.
3. They would then tow or push it towards Earth so that it ends up in a stable orbit near the moon.
4. In 2021 astronauts would then use an Orion capsule - a manned spacecraft - to land on the asteroid and bring back soil and rock samples for analysis.
5, This asteroid would also be used as a stop-off point for astronauts on their way to Mars, as missions could launch without having to escape the Earth's atmosphere. Read more
